Why PFAS-Free Period Underwear Matters (And Where to Find It)

Let’s talk about something that’s been making waves in the world of period care: PFAS.

If you’re hearing that term and thinking, "Wait… what even are PFAS and why are they in underwear?!" — you’re not alone. The good news? Not all period products are created equal. And Fri Period underwear is made without using PFAS.

Wait... What Are PFAS and Why Should I Care?

PFAS (short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals used to make products resistant to water, stains, and heat. Sounds useful, right? Except here’s the kicker: they don’t break down in the environment or our bodies. Like, ever.

They’ve been dubbed “forever chemicals” for a reason. These substances are found in a shocking number of everyday products, from nonstick cookware to makeup to... yep, even underwear.

Research has linked them to a range of health issues, including hormone disruption, immune suppression, and even cancer. Not exactly what you want hanging out in your period panties.

How PFAS Ended Up in Period Underwear

Some brands use PFAS chemicals to make underwear water-repellent or stain-resistant. Sneaky, right? You wouldn’t know it from the label. And since the vaginal area is one of the most absorbent parts of the body, exposure to harmful chemicals through period products is a serious concern.

That’s where we come in.

We don’t play with toxins. At Fri Period, we’re all about radical transparency, comfort, and safety. That means:

  • We don't use PFAS. Our factory tests their fabrics throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Organic cotton and bamboo viscose: breathable, safe, and ultra comfy
  • No greenwashing: if it says safe on the label, we mean it.
  • OEKO-TEX Certified fabrics so you know it’s been tested for over 100 toxic substances

We believe your period care should support your health, not put it at risk.

The Problem With PFAS in Period Panties

Let’s break it down:

  • Skin absorption: Your vaginal skin is super absorbent. PFAS don’t just sit on top—they can be absorbed.
  • Chronic exposure: Most people wear menstrual panties for hours (sometimes overnight), so prolonged exposure = higher risk.
  • Hormonal impact: For people already dealing with cycle irregularities or hormonal issues, PFAS can add fuel to the fire.

If you're being mindful about the food you eat or the skincare you use, your period care should be just as intentional.

How to Tell If Period Underwear Is PFAS-Free

Here’s what to look for when shopping:

  • Brands that are transparent on their site and packaging (if it’s not loud and proud, be suspicious)
  • Brands that share testing reports or certifications
  • Materials like organic cotton, bamboo viscose, and TENCEL lyocell, which naturally don’t require chemical finishes.

FAQs

1. Are all Fri Period products PFAS-free?
We do not use PFAS in our products. Unfortunately, PFAS is known to leach into our soil and our water so it's near impossible to avoid your exposure altogether.

2. What materials do you use instead of PFAS?
You can check our individual product pages to see what they are made of but we use a blend or organic cotton, bamboo and some more high-tech fabrics on the inner gusset to keep you leak-proof.

3. Why are PFAS used in other period underwear brands?
Some brands use PFAS-based treatments to enhance absorbency or stain resistance. We don’t, and never will.

4. Are PFAS banned?
Some jurisdictions are moving toward banning PFAS in hygiene products, but regulations vary. That’s why choosing brands that proactively avoid PFAS is so important.
