How Customer Feedback Shaped Our New Period Boxer Briefs

Want to know a secret about building what we believe are the best period boxer briefs out there? We didn't design them alone. Our customers did half the work — they just didn't know it at the time.

When you're a small, women-owned period underwear brand, every review lands in your inbox. Every DM gets read by an actual human (usually me, coffee in hand!). And when the same piece of feedback shows up more than once, you don't file it away for "next year's product review cycle." You act on it.

This is the story of how real feedback reshaped our period boxers — literally — and why I think being small is our superpower.

The Feedback That Started It All

Our Period Boxers have always been the quiet achiever of our range. People love these boxer briefs for heavy flow days, overnight wear, and that full-coverage, no-ride-up feeling. A lot of people love that they give enough coverage you can wear them solo around the house.

What We Changed: Goodbye Raw Elastic Waistband

The old elastic waistband did its job — it held everything up. But it was raw elastic, and raw elastic against bloated, sensitive, day-one skin isn't exactly a hug.

The new waistband on our period boxers is different in two ways:

It's thicker. More surface area means the pressure spreads out instead of digging in. Think of the difference between carrying groceries with a thin plastic bag handle versus a wide canvas strap. Same weight, completely different feeling.
It's covered in our bamboo fabric. No more raw elastic against your skin. The waistband now wears the same buttery-soft bamboo blend as the rest of the boxer, so it feels smooth and gentle even when you're bloated, tender, or just over it.

The result? Added comfort and support without the squeeze. It's a small change on paper. On your body, on day one of your period, it's anything but small.

Why Being Small Means We Can Actually Listen

Here's something I've learned since launching Fri Period: big brands don't ignore feedback because they don't care. They ignore it because they can't move. When you're producing at massive scale, a design change has to wait for the annual redesign cycle, get approved by a whole bunch of different departments, and survive a costing review. By the time the fix ships, the customer who flagged it has moved on.

We don't have six departments. We have a small team (just me, Amy and Kiara at the moment!), a direct line to our customers, and the freedom to say "let's fix that" — and then actually fix it.

That's the trade-off of buying from a small brand, and I think it's a beautiful one. You won't find us in every shopping centre. But when you tell us the waistband pinches, the next version won't pinch. Your voice doesn't get lost in a feedback funnel — it lands on my desk.

The Boxers Themselves: What Hasn't Changed

One honest note here: because these chemicals are so widespread in the environment, no brand can promise absolute zero — but we never use them in making our products.
Serious leak protection. The built-in absorbent gusset uses multiple absorbent layers — a moisture-wicking layer to keep you dry, an absorbent core that soaks up menstrual fluid, and a leak resistant layer to keep everything where it belongs. Together, these leak-proof designs hold the equivalent of up to 4 regular tampons' worth of menstrual blood.
Full coverage through the thighs, which helps with side leaks and chafing on active days.
Odour control, naturally. Bamboo naturally neutralises odour, even on heavy flow days.

Reusable and easy to care for. Rinse, machine wash cold, air dry — done.
